Wrath

Actually I was going to write about Lust, but some recent events got in the way so I'll write about Wrath. First of all I'd like to bring to your notice that I don't believe much in the concept of "sin", I believe in a life ethic that doesn't necessarily have much to do with the traditional concept of moral, but still, I do think that Wrath (and probably Greed) are the most harmful. Those two and the Mother of all Sins: Ignorance.

So, yes, those recent events: I guess most of you know by now, but maybe some don't so you need to be informed about this. We usually assume that the fashion world is free from physical violence (verbal violence is a whole different matter, as Joan Crawford said in "The Women": "There's a name for you ladies, bit it isn't used in high society outside of the kennel"), so I was pretty shocked to read the incident between Jack McCollough (one half of Proenza Schouler) and Kiefer Shuterland at a Met Ball after-party hosted by Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy last week. Apparently Jack accidentaly bumped in Brooke Shields (according to the actress it was "no big deal", she fell but she blamed it on her 6-inch heels) and Kiefer (who allegedly had a couple of drink too many and was in a violent mood) butt-headed Jack, who had to undergo surgery though fortunately his nose wasn't broken. Kiefer has been officially charged with assault so now this whole thing is going to court (and if I'm not mistaken I think he's already under parole for driving under the influence of alcohol).

Well, yes, there is wrath in all this, but nothing compared to Anna Wintour's anger, according to a spokesperson she is "FURIOUS that the Met Gala got upstaged by Kiefer doing something stupid at an after-party that wasn't even part of her event. Now that's all anyone is talking about, not HER party. And she is so genuinely fond of Jack, she has supported him and Lazaro for years, she really feels they are part of the future of American fashion. So she's doubly annoyed."

Oh, and it wasn't the only casualty that night: someone stepped on the train of Natalia Vodianova's vintage Fortuny dress and ruined it. Now THAT'S something to be angry about!

Update: In spite of the first informations, a Proenza Schouler spokesperson declared recently that Jack's nose was broken in three places and had to be "reset".

Oh Spring... at last!

Yes, I know I am terrible, not updating in such a long time, I'm really sorry! I hate to seem like I'm always complaining about the same thing, but believe me, I've had so much work this last month that I was just too tired, and also I've been busy with more personal matters... and I must say that I'm not so motivated to discuss fashion (well, not exactly fashion, but trends) because it's what I do all day, so what if I write more about other things? Though of course fashion is always present in whatever I may come up with, even if tangentially.

So anyways, the other day (or rather the other month, to be exact) I was talking to my cousin Lee, who lives in Canada, and she was asking me what I thought was going to be fashionable this spring, and I couldn't give her an answer straight away, but I started thinking in a practical way what pieces could update the wardrobe of a real working woman, someone with a normal figure, a real life, a regular job, and a limited budget. Well, of course style is very personal, but anyways...

First of all one of the essential pieces this season (and the next) is the blazer. The most stylish version is the "boyfriend" jacket, slightly oversized, which surprisingly, and against popular belief, suits well almost every figure. It works in the office, it can be casual with skinny jeans or dressy over a little black dress in the evening. Rolling up the sleeves will give the fashionable touch. There's also many cropped blazers, but maybe they're more difficult to wear and not as versatile... in any case there's definitely an emphasis on the shoulders, which will continue next winter with the 40's inspired looks.

As for pants, slouchy masculine pants are very stylish, worn cropped and rolled up. Skinny pants are still there, but if you have them you have them, if you don't maybe it's too late to start. The "harem" pants, sarouels and jodhpurs are also still going strong, but i.m.h.o. they're maybe not such a good investment, I don't think they'll have a very long fashion life (but, hey, I might be wrong!). Not much happening with skirts right now, the newest shape is the narrow pencil skirt, but I don't know, skirts are a bit boring, maybe we men should start wearing them.
Of course dresses are still very important, almost any kind of dress... as long as it's nice. There's a 20's and 30's influence, and a good idea might be finding a nice vintage piece. Another good vintage piece to invest in is a short leather jacket.

Probably "the" fashion color is "nude", which is a pretty silly name, since depending whether you are Lily Cole or Alec Wek "nude" can be anything from ivory to wenge. So well, in any case, nude. You must find the right shade though because it's a difficult color for the face, but it does look very good on some people. Marled grey (yes, just like that old sweatshirt) is also a very important color, it has that sort of sporty 80's feel to it, and it looks nice mixed with bright pastel or neon colors.

I was surprised to see that the "gladiator" sandal was still going on, not crazy about them myself. Wooden wedges are also a big thing, and anything with studs on it. I don't know if there's anything really new with bags, except for the death of the "it-bag", large soft clutches are nice, and the little Chanel type bags with the chain strap are cute, but must be worn with some irony and mixed with unexpected items. Of course if it's a real 2.55 it's super-cute.

Well, please comment on what you think is fashionable this spring, I'm sure I left plenty of things out, I'm in my dried-up brain phase.

And check this out, Raquel (Gratis total) interviewed in Marie-Claire, of course her blog is great and she deserves it... and she's so sweet she mentions this modest blog, I'm not so sure I deserve such honor, but thank you so much, it means a lot to me.

Fashion... recession?

Well, the fall shows were not very exciting, were they? But it was to be expected, in these difficult times... and after all designers, talented as they may be, need to sell clothes if they want to keep their job. Of course we've seen beautiful clothes, but this is not a moment for risky fashion breakthroughs.

If there was any evolution I think it was a different focus on the shoulder, specially at Yves Saint Laurent, Prada and Lanvin, that reminded more the late 30's than the 80's. Actually these were my favorite collections, moving forward but staying in tune with the times, and well, real, if you see what I mean. I just loved the "gladiator" dresses at Prada and the combination of pinstripe and black leather at Saint Laurent. I didn't understand what Nicolas Ghesquière was trying to say at Balenciaga, it reminded me of the dresses Linda Evans wore in Dynasty, but maybe I need some time to assimilate it. Apparently the buyers were very happy with the collection because it was commercial, so I don't know.

On the other hand I'm pretty tired with some things. One of them is the Blondie /Grace Jones /Rock Chick /80's thing. I just can't stand it anymore, I mean, it's cute on the street but it's just not for the runway anymore. How long is this 80's revival thing going to last? In never really happens in the end anyways!
Another thing I'm a bit tired of is the British "enfant terrible" thing, meaning Galliano and McQueen. For me it's becoming too theatrical: the corsets, the drag queen make-up, the 8 inch heels, the heavy headdresses, it's not even real clothes anymore. Yes, the workmanship is beautiful, the shows are stunning, and so what? Of course you will argue that sometimes fashion must be a dream, that real life is boring enough, but for me this dream is starting to look more like a nightmare, and in the end I get this uneasy feeling seeing this under-fed girls, deprived of their individuality, that can hardly breathe, walk or move their arms, wrapped in feathers and plastic. Why not barbed wire while we're at it? (hmm, better not give them ideas...). I must say though I'm grateful to McQueen because he has given us the opportunity of a healthy argument about fashion.

I know I'm straying away from my subject, but I didn't want to do a review of the collections in the first place... I think that some designers forget something: that they must dress women, not use them to project their fantasies. Mademoiselle Chanel, who was sometimes pretty grouchy, used to accuse homosexual designers (actually she was aiming at Dior) of doing just this, but of course she was simplifying matters (she was a bit dogmatic sometimes). One the designers who respected women most, Yves Saint Laurent -who wanted his clothes to make them strong and beautiful and at the same time to be like a caress on their bodies, using only silk satin to line them- once said: "The most beautiful garment a woman can wear are the arms of the man she loves".

(Ejem, mejor no dar ideas...).

Envy

Those who know me know that I am not an envious person. I am usually happy about other people's gifts and achievements... until I opened a magazine and saw this picture of Isabel and Ruben Toledo's Manhattan "atelier d'artiste". I don't envy their success -I assume it is well earned with talent and hard work- or their glitzy bohemian lifestyle. I envy THEIR HOUSE, it's sheer murderous envy for that skylight and that view of the Empire State Building, even though I can well imagine that it is maybe as hot as a cruise ship boiler room in summer and nearly impossible to heat in winter... haha... oh, envy is really something very ugly...
(You never know, this might become a serie of posts about the deadly sins... )
