Le Scandale

I didn't really want to comment on the Galliano affair in itself, it's all we've been talking about these days and, yes, it's shocking, and yes, I have my personal opinion... but I think we just see the tip of the iceberg. And since I don't know Mr. Galliano personally I don't know if he was joking, serious, drunk (well, actually that seemed quite clear, right?), and/or if he has a substance abuse problem. For the moment he's checking into rehab, and his career at Dior is over.

Sometimes when things like this happen we feel the need to stop and look back. First of all I don't want to give the idea that I am reveling in his disgrace. Whatever I think today about his work I have always thought, and what I may now think about his person is irrelevant. I don't like judging people without knowing all the facts. His situation is unhappy enough, however unfortunate his comments have been -and without really being able to know his true intentions- his punishment has been very hard. Secondly I also want to make very clear that I admire his talent, I think he is a great cutter, has a great sense of color, and of course has an inborn sense of show business. I have enjoyed his shows and been in awe of some of his dresses (I even chose one of them to illustrate a post recently) which I am sure are impeccably crafted, but the lingering doubt I always had is about his true contribution to the Maison Dior. Yes, his shows were the most talked about and the most photographed, sales for perfumes and cosmetics sky-rocketed and the doors for the multi-billion market of emerging capitalist countries have flung wide open. But there are other questions that arise behind this commercial success and media hype. Is it fashion, in the sense that his designs have helped push the boundaries forward? Or, is it elegant? Or, does it really matter that now Dior mostly attracts a flashy and nouveau-riche crowd? For me, and it a personal feeling that I understand you might not share, there was always an after-taste of parody, his shows sometimes gave me the impression of a troop of luxurious drag-queens mimicking Victoire and Dovima, and I often felt the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing wether the women in these shows were enshrined as goddesses or trapped like slaves in corsets and brocades.

Of course his inventiveness in those collections was endless, and his technique incredibly skillful, but if you look closely at the original Dior designs you will see that the drapes, gathers, twists, fake collars, impossible sleeves and trompe-l'oeuil buttonings were already there. Only Galliano exaggerated them and put them in the limelight, but in the process they lost something of their grace and elegance. M. Dior himself also appreciated a good show or a good scandal, and he knew how to use them, but more often than not his sartorial tricks were mysterious and hidden, and responded to an experimental concept, in which he constantly re-invented himself, going from the "New Look" to "Envol" to "Oval" to "H Line" and "A Line" before his untimely death. And I'm not saying that a designer must not dive in the archive of the house he works fo: Ghesquiére does it and even re-edits original Balenciagas, and Pilati keeps reinterpreting the classic Saint-Laurent motifs season after season, but I have the feeling that they go further in projecting those brands into the future, or at least the present.

It might be expected after this terrible crisis (though after all maybe he was not all that happy at Dior, who knows) John Galliano will find a new path to express his talent. I hope so, sincerely.

Great post Ale! truly well written and yes indeed it is very difficult to not get caught up in what everyone else is saying about the situation without our own judgment but we must be better than that. I love your attention to fashion's details and your personal knowledge and opinion. BRAVO!

So, you don't like judging people without knowing all the facts, but you know for sure that all Russians who buy Dior do it with mafia money?... Cool.

Mr Pilgrim, I have greatly enjoyed your last post. Very inteligent and with compassion. It is all not that bad as it seems, he has done it and his name will be forever connected with this time in Fashion. Now he should calm down get healthy and enjoy life. he is an artist, he don't look back....( Hopefully) and if Dior was in the right mind they would of course decide for something completely different and the only person I can think of is You and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, you got it all and wouldn't you give Dior a happy turn in his grave? You are the best!
