Prada-realism

OK, enough ego-trip for now.

As Di said, references more than five years old escape many people, so the obvious alleged "inspiration" (or whatever) for Prada's show was "Mad Men"... "Mad Men"? Seriously? Why not "Gossip Girl"?

Di also tweeted (and Eugenia de la Torriente wrote) that there is something in the formal and restrained sexuality of these clothes that reminds of Hitchcock's icy heroines, there are self-references to Prada's collections of the mid 90's -but more mature, with heavy tweeds and knits and retro prints that are more Lucienne Day than 70's wallpaper- and there is an ironic nod to those demure and sexy secretaries from the 50's (but still more "The Apartment" or Marilyn Monroe in "Monkey Business" than "Mad Men"). Somehow the first thing that came to my mind when I say the show was Antonioni's 1955 film "The Girlfriends", but also Annie Girardot in "Rocco and His Brothers" in the scene on the roof of the Duomo and Silvana Mangano's curves in "Bitter Rice".

Because this collection is about femininity and reality, by exploring her own past Miuccia Prada projects a new strong woman in the future, and she conveys this message not only with the clothes but with her choice of models: Lara Stone, Doutzen Kroes and Miranda Kerr are considered too curvy (aka fat) in this industry for anything except Victoria's Secret. Without gimmicks or extravaganza Miuccia Prada has made a quiet revolution that will have, I am sure, a long lasting influence. It was about time.

¿"Mad Men"? ¿En serio? ¿Y porqué no "Gossip Girl"?

Gluttony

Gluttony is the sin of eating and drinking in excess, but our society has come to such a strange relationship with food that it could now mean something completely different. Nowadays food is no longer an unattainable necessity, and large parts of the population are overweight because the cheaper the food the greasier and unhealthy. On the other hand we are constantly bombarded with images of what is supposed to be the new ideal body, thin to the point of ethereal, it seems that the point is now to eat less, but much more expensive, more gourmet, more organic: anti-gluttony is the new gluttony. Actually, eating isn't fashionable. Kate Moss said that nothing tasted as good as feeling thin, Gemma Ward is done and over with because she decided to look like a normal person (oh no!) and Coco Rocha was told she "needed to loose some weight" at 108 pounds for 5' 10''.
And this is a true story: I know a lady who serves lovely plastic cookies with her tea.

Clothes, Not Fashion

I've said already that I was a bit tired about the whole fashion trend thing. We are now almost through the spring runways and of course we've seen some interesting things (we still have to see what our dear Stefano has prepared for us this time) but... I just find it tiresome in a way. One designer though that reconciles me with clothes is Martin Grant, I love the way his collections are so real, new without being extreme, and always elegant. He's maybe not going to change the history of fashion, but he sure makes some beautiful clothes. And another thing I love is that he shows them not on a twelve year old Russian model but on a real woman: British model Susie Bick is fourty and fabulous.

And something I read (which I thought was just a rumor but is apparently confirmed): Sonia Rykiel for H&M, what do you think?

Half an apple - Media manzana

That must be what models eat, if you look closely at the pictures and leave out the clothes, the make-up, the lights, and look only at their bodies. Clothes look good on slim models, we know that, but aren't we going too far? I mean, being thin (even very thin) is one thing, being plain skinny is another, and some of the girls look like they're sick... unfortunately they probably have to be like that if they want to do another runway than Versace (by the way, Carmen Kass looked great).
Please someone give them a bacon sandwich!

Blow-Up

Lucio mentions the famous photo shoot scene from Antonioni's "Blow-Up" (1966) in his post about Peggy Moffitt and Rudy Gernreich. I'll try to find out who the other models are and I'll come back to the film in another post, I'm a bit lazy today (saturday night side-effects), but here is the scene itself:

And this has nothing to do with the film (or maybe yes?), I read today an interview with philosopher André Compte-Sponville in "El País Semanal".  Of all the very interesting things he says two specially drew my attention: that there is more happiness in action than in hope, because if you want what doesn't depend on yourself you'll be afraid that it won't happen, and what he calls "happy hopelessness": once we have understood that there are things we can't control and that all that awaits us is death, we realize that the best we can do is enjoy as much as possible the life we have.
(Funny, I started this blog to talk fashion and all sort of frivolous things, and look where we're getting at!)

By the way, I had shut down my fotolog but it's back up.

Katoucha

I guess by now you know, former supermodel Katoucha is reported missing after attending a party last friday. Her purse was found near the houseboat under the "Alexandre III" bridge in Paris where she lived, police thinks she might have fallen accidentally into the Seine.
The 47 year old Guinean beauty, know as "the Peul Princess" (though she was from an educated middle-class family) was one of the famous black models to grace Yves Saint Laurent's Haute Couture shows. She was also an activist against female mutilation in Africa.
