Lust

bigger drawings here - dibujos en grande aquí

I recently read a french blog (sorry, I lost the link, somebody posted it on Facebook) where they recommended - to assure a continuous flow of visitors to your blog - to talk as crudely as possible about sex, and if about your own experiences, the more pathetic the better. Yeah, OK, it's not like I'm going to do that, besides my mother reads this blog (hi ma), so... no. Mind you I might write about dating some day, because that's an interesting topic I know a couple of things about. Carrie and her friends made us believe that being single and (way) over thirty in a big city is glamorous and fun, but maybe we should give this a second thought, with the help of a couple of Cosmopolitans (or Flirtinis).

Anyway, I have to continue my series of the Deadly Sins, and I have to talk about Lust sooner or later so let's get it over with. My first idea was to post a video of the Kirkpinar Turkish Oil Wrestling festival... well, men in leather shorts and dripping with olive oil trying to get a grip on each-other sounds interesting, but as usual reality doesn't live up to fantasy. In any case if you are really interested go here. I decline all responsibility.

Still, I needed to illustrate this post, and just the other day, cleaning up some drawers I came across these drawings I made a few years ago (probably just doodling at some tedious meeting with a lot of numbers, percentage bars and pie charts which overwhelmed my blondness) and actually I think they're not all that bad, considering. The drawings, I mean.

The Tailor

"The Tailor" by Giovanni Battista Moroni (1565/70)

I think I'm in love, too bad this cute guy lived more than 400 years ago. The severe espression with just a shadow of an ironic smile, the tired eyes (yes, fashion is hard work, believe me) with that intense gaze, the strong yet delicate hands... and he's pretty stylish, too.

Well...

I'm going to be completely honest: I'm not sure I really understood Pilati's last show for YSL, but then again maybe it's one of those collections that you need to see a few times before they sink in. I loved the shoes and some of the ensembles, specially the ones contructed around pencil skirts. A white tunic with a pink skirt was very elegant in a minimalist way. But I don't know, the strawberries and the knee-slits I thought a bit strange...
In any case I am aware that seeing the clothes in the store is going to be something completely different (as I said before about Prada and Marni, for instance), the runway looks are very experimental but translate into very beautiful and wearable clothes. And he's good looking so I am going to forgive him. By the way, are those new tattoos on his arms?

(And what was going on about Japan in the comments to my last post? I have to investigate this... )

Plaid Please!

The plaid shirt trend has been around for a couple of years already (think Balenciaga and Mary-Kate Olsen), but it seems it's going to be one of the key looks next fall, just by itself or mixed with different patterns (stripes, more plaid, even flowers and paisley), and also with a dressier styling (look out for the return of the bow-tie).

The main and most obvious inspirations are the grunge revival (in the picture Kurt Cobain in concert)...

... the nineties altogether (oh God)...

... los noventa en general (ay Dios)...

... and the growing visibility of the "bear" aesthetic, embodied in this case by designers Costello and Tagliapietra.

And my dad has just sent me this picture of himself in the 60's wearing a plaid shirt. This type of shirt was worn by the fishermen in the Canary Islands were he is from.

And Haquiles has given me permission to publish a picture of him with one of his many plaid shirts...

Te be or not to be... fashionable!

In "Hamlet", when Laertes is taking leave of his family to return to France, Polonius (among other fatherly recommendations) tells him:

"Costly thy habit as your purse can buy,
But not expressed in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man."

A wise fashion advice, as good then as now. For a man of high birth in Elizabethan England being fashionable was no small business, as can be seen in this miniatures by Nicholas Hillier, a self-portrait and portraits of two of his trendy friends.

Busca calidad, no ostentación,

The Crystal Skull

Now Indy is roaming the world again in search of a Crystal Skull, maybe this lovely knick-knack by artist (?) Demian Hirst? I'm sure the previous owner doesn't give a damn about the diamonds or the 100 million dollars or pounds or whatever they were that it costs (more than you and I could earn in a lifetime in any case).

Anyways... though Harrison still looks pretty good considering he's over 60, I'd rather remember him like this:

And since I mentioned it somewhere else, here's a photograph signed by him I have. I didn't ask for it myself (I think I would have mumbled some nonsense or plain fainted), a friend of a friend of my parents who worked with him got it for me. My name is misspelled but we forgive him, don't we?

Carpe Diem, Carpe Diem, Carpe Diem...

Buying expensive shoes, dancing the night away, preparing virtual Manhattans, even unleashing destructive fury (Kali-maa wears Prada, the Goddess, though cruel, is fair!) upon those who DO deserve it, are just ways of mentally repeating "Carpe Diem, Carpe Diem, Carpe Diem..." like a mantra while this thing called life is dragging us who knows where, probably a place one doesn't want to go to. Since "escape" seems to be the key word, here's one male model that doesn't wax... Hallelujah!

¡Aleluya!

Attack of the Pilgrims - El Ataque de los Pilgrims

I thought it was funny that all the models in Michael Kors' fall show were wearing this big geeky glasses. I just made myself a new pair of smaller ones, though I still love my wayfarers but I don't want to over-expose them.

(OK, I know, these are taller and younger pilgrims...)

There's life out there - Hay vida ahí fuera

I'm at home with the flu, so I'm not much in the mood for a serious post about fashion or anything...

OK, girls, I understand your enthusiasm about the Burberry boys, but personally I don't mind if a few still look like this (or even if they wear plaid shirts).

Burberry Prorsum 08/09

Burberry Prorsum fall 08 collection by Cristopher Bailey, inspired by L. S. Lowry, and also by Oliver Twist, it seems to me... I love the coats, the bag, the sweater in the last picture, I wonder a bit about the cut of the pants though.
Seeing the models I'm lucky because we lankies are in!

Pilati the man - Pilati el hombre

Because, let's face it, not only is he a great designer, he's also quite handsome. Behind that chic facade there's something wild...

I'm preparing a post about his spring collection, I'm just too exhausted today...
