Just a little note to say that this picture of my mother and was posted on The Sartorialist in the "Vintage Photo Contest". Ma thinks it was taken in 1972, but it seems to me I look small to be 3 or 4 years old... I don't know, I'm very bad at calculating children's ages.

Amara Willy

Yes, finally: yesterday, March 12 2010, at 2:06 a.m. in Los Angeles, California, my sister gave birth to her third child, a girl, beautiful little Amara Willy. Congratulations to the parents, Alegría and DaShaun, you did a great job (look at that hair!). My family and I are very happy, proud... as for myself... seeing this new little person in my life seems so amazing! (Sorry if I'm a bit incoherent, I don't have words to express what I feel)

Waiting....

No, not waiting for Pilati (also), but for something much more important: we're about to welcome a new member in our family any day now, I'll keep you posted.

In any case, I'm more and more into writing whatever I want, all this blogger competitiveness about how many daily visits you get and all that, phew... as Phillipe VI de Valois said: "Qui m'aime me suive". I keep saying how weary I am with fashion sometimes (really) and seeing all the shows, which is something I have to do for my work, is quite tiresome. I still think it is not as it used to be, fashion has become too much like corporate business and less like art, but still, once in a while true talent shines through to bring back some illusion into our lives.

Nicolas Ghesquière, the futurist. Beautiful colors, incredible materials, experimental cuts, but no suits, no evening dresses as such, almost nothing that can be considered a conventional item of clothing (not until it hits the stores in any case), nothing you can imagine on a red carpet. Still one knows it will be influential. It's strange, but it will be real some day. It's like trying to understand Einstein's theories. Don't try, just accept it.

Alber Elbaz, the magician. Creating a world of dreams with his feet well grounded in the real world, he explores his origins and the contradictions of the modern woman between glamour and power. His usual repertoire takes a new ethnic, tougher, turn. Who else could play this magic trick to make us see leopard when it is in reality lace? But this magic only works on this side of the looking-glass. As a future ambassador for UNICEF Elbaz might think, as we might, that a water pump in an african village is far more beautiful that the most beautiful of dresses. Frivolous? I don't think so. Dreams are necessary, reality even more so.

Country Life

As I said, I am spending a few days with my family. I stayed with my sister in L.A. and now I am with my parents, who live in Oregon, somewhere in the country near Portland.

It's funny because I haven't been in the country (I mean like really staying in the country for some time, not just for a little day trip or week-end to a rural hotel) for a long time: I love it (the landscapes, the quietness, the ever changing sky, the actual smell of fresh air), in a way it brings me back to a sense of innocence (not that my childhood had anything to do with the country, but anyways....), and on the other hand I feel a bit like an alien, I'm too adapted to life in the city and end up with a "what would Carrie do?" sort of feeling. But, ah, I have my plaid shirts!

This is Oregon. I also posted them on my facebook but posting them here too just in case.

Plaid Please!

The plaid shirt trend has been around for a couple of years already (think Balenciaga and Mary-Kate Olsen), but it seems it's going to be one of the key looks next fall, just by itself or mixed with different patterns (stripes, more plaid, even flowers and paisley), and also with a dressier styling (look out for the return of the bow-tie).

The main and most obvious inspirations are the grunge revival (in the picture Kurt Cobain in concert)...

... the nineties altogether (oh God)...

... los noventa en general (ay Dios)...

... and the growing visibility of the "bear" aesthetic, embodied in this case by designers Costello and Tagliapietra.

And my dad has just sent me this picture of himself in the 60's wearing a plaid shirt. This type of shirt was worn by the fishermen in the Canary Islands were he is from.

And Haquiles has given me permission to publish a picture of him with one of his many plaid shirts...
