Princess (dis)Grace

I found this nice little book about Grace Kelly the other day, with some pictures that were apparently unpublished before. 

You probably already know how she was born in a wealthy Catholic family from Philadelphia (a delicate child that didn't get much affection from her exacting mother and busy father), how she left for New York at 17 to pursue her own dream (well, she was a Scorpio, after all), her first roles in the theater and television before "High Noon" made her famous and Alfred Hitchcock, her pygmalion, shaped her into his ideal of an icy and elegant "femme fatale".

For sure you've also heard about her romances with William Holden and Oleg Cassini, and that she was not as "ice-cold" as she seemed to be, and of course we all know what happened when she travelled to Cannes in 1955 to attend the film festival, and what happened after that, a somewhat disturbing consummation of a fairy tale. 

Maybe when in her later years, alone in her palace, with her faith and (so they say) the bottle, she realized one must be careful for what one wishes, for it may come true...

Encontré el otro día este bonito libro sobre Grace Kelly, con algunas fotos aparentemente inéditas.

Probablemente ya sabéis que nació en el seno de una acomodada familia Católica en Filadelfia (una niña delicada que no recibió mucho afecto de su exigente madre y de un padre ocupado), como se marchó a Nueva York con 17 años para perseguir su sueño (bueno, era Escorpio, después de todo), sus primeros papeles en el teatro y la televisión antes de hacerse famosa en "Solo ante el peligro" y de que Alfred Hitchcock, su pigmalión, la moldeara según su ideal de una gélida y elegante "femme fatale".

Seguramente habéis oído de sus romances con William Holden y Oleg Cassini, y que no era tan "gélida" como aparentaba, y claro, sabéis lo que pasó cuando viajó a Cannes en 1955 para asistir al Festival de Cine, y lo que pasó después, la inquietante consumación de un cuento de hadas. 

Tal vez en sus últimos años, sola en palacio con su Fe y (según dicen) la botella, se dió cuenta que se debe tener cuidado con lo que se desea, porque se puede hacer realidad...

Oh Jackie!

Jackie Kennedy won her place as one of the most influential twentieth century fashion icons with her sense of style and her flawlessly groomed "chic", though personally I find her elegance somewhat shallow. 

Her public persona was carefully staged for a perfect performance as happy wife (?), young mother and ideal First Lady of a modern and cultivated America. Her clothes were the costumes for the character she created, often copies or bought at stores that had license to reproduce parisian designs, sometimes the real thing (as the infamous pink Chanel she wore in Dallas).

Jackie Kennedy se ganó su sitio como uno de los iconos de moda más influyentes del siglo XX con su sentido del estilo y su "chic" pulido al máximo, aunque personalmente encuentro su elegancia algo superficial.

Su personaje público era una cuidadosamente montada puesta en escena como esposa feliz (?), madre joven y Primera Dama ideal de una moderna y culta América. Sus atuendos eran el vestuario para el papel que se había creado, a menudo copias o comprados en tiendas que tenían licencia para reproducir modelos parisinos, a veces lo auténtico (como el malhadado Chanel rosa que llevó en Dallas).

Inaugural 

For the Inaugural Ball in January 1961, Jackie wore an Ivory silk double twill satin gown designed by Oleg Cassini, reminiscent of her french heritage and her love of History and the XVIIIth century, though it bears some similitude to an inaccurate "stolen" sketch of Balanciaga's design for Queen Fabiola's wedding dress published in a fashion magazine.

Para el Baile Inaugural en enero de 1961, Jackie lució un vestido en satén doble twill de seda diseñado por Oleg Cassini, con referencias a sus raíces francesas y su amor por la Historia y el siglo XVIII, aunque guarda cierta semejanza con un boceto inexacto "robado" de un diseño de Balenciaga para el vestido de novia de la Reina Fabiola publicado en una revista de moda.

On her first official voyage outside the United States she chose a Pierre Cardin suit she had purchased 5 years earlier. Note the theatrical use of red to match the Mounted Police's uniform and the detail of the interlocked straps in the back of the jacket.

For a private audience with John XXIII, Oleg Cassini designed an austere black wool and silk "Alaskine" dress inspired by XVIIth century Spain.

India

Her wardrobe for her semi-official tour in 1961 (she travelled with her sister Lee Radziwill) was designed in the bright colors typical of the host country, though the cut was contemporary and chic. On her arrival in Dehli she wore a hot pink Rajah coat in wool and silk "Alaskine", by Oleg Cassini, and a matching wide brimmed boater to protect her from the Indian sun, designed by Roy Halston for Bergdorf and Goodman.

For a dinner to honor president of Ivory Coast Félix Houphouët-Boigny in May 1962, Oleg Cassini made a embroidered tulle dress after a design by Karl Lagerfeld for Jean Patou. Madame Houphouët-Boigny, known as the "African Jackie", was dressed in Pierre Balmain.
