OK, enough ego-trip for now.

As Di said, references more than five years old escape many people, so the obvious alleged "inspiration" (or whatever) for Prada's show was "Mad Men"... "Mad Men"? Seriously? Why not "Gossip Girl"?

Di also tweeted (and Eugenia de la Torriente wrote) that there is something in the formal and restrained sexuality of these clothes that reminds of Hitchcock's icy heroines, there are self-references to Prada's collections of the mid 90's -but more mature, with heavy tweeds and knits and retro prints that are more Lucienne Day than 70's wallpaper- and there is an ironic nod to those demure and sexy secretaries from the 50's (but still more "The Apartment" or Marilyn Monroe in "Monkey Business" than "Mad Men"). Somehow the first thing that came to my mind when I say the show was Antonioni's 1955 film "The Girlfriends", but also Annie Girardot in "Rocco and His Brothers" in the scene on the roof of the Duomo and Silvana Mangano's curves in "Bitter Rice".

Because this collection is about femininity and reality, by exploring her own past Miuccia Prada projects a new strong woman in the future, and she conveys this message not only with the clothes but with her choice of models: Lara Stone, Doutzen Kroes and Miranda Kerr are considered too curvy (aka fat) in this industry for anything except Victoria's Secret. Without gimmicks or extravaganza Miuccia Prada has made a quiet revolution that will have, I am sure, a long lasting influence. It was about time.

Di también twiteó (y Eugenia de la Torriente escribió) que hay algo en la sexualidad contenida y formal de estas prendas que recuerda a las gélidas heroínas de Hitchcock, hay auto-referencias a los desfiles de Prada de mediados de los 90 -pero más maduro, con tweeds y puntos pesados y estampados retro que son más Lucienne Day que papel pintado de los 70- y hay un guiño irónico a esas secretarias atildadas y sexy de los 50 (aún así, más "El apartamento" o Marilyn Monroe en "Me siento rejuvenecer" que "Mad Men"). De algún modo lo primero que me vino a la mente cuando vi el desfile es la película de Antonioni "Las amigas" de 1955, pero también Annie Girardot en "Rocco y sus hermanos" en la escena en el tejado del Duomo y las curvas de Silvana Mangano' en "Arroz amargo".

Porque esta colección trata sobre femineidad y realidad, explorando su propio pasado Miuccia Prada proyecta en el futuro a una mujer nueva y fuerte, y transmite este mensaje no sólo son la ropa sino también con la elección de sus modelos: Lara Stone, Doutzen Kroes y Miranda Kerr se consideran demasiado curvilíneas (o sea gordas) en esta industria excepto para Victoria's Secret. Sin trucos fáciles ni extravagancias Miuccia Prada ha hecho una revolución silenciosa que tendrá, estoy seguro, una influencia duradera. Ya era hora.

2008/09

Well, now that the fall runways are over, all I can say is: how unexciting. Maybe because of the lurking crisis, or because we're in a transitional fashion moment, there hasn't been much new out there. There's been good and bad (even terrible) collections, but nothing striking, even at houses like Marni or Lanvin, just to name two. Since deep down I'm a minimalist I decided to pick only six collections and a few looks from each. You can see all the rest here.

Bueno, ahora que han pasado los desfiles de invierno, solo puedo decir: que poco emocionante. Ya sea la crisis que amenaza, o que estamos en un momento de transición en moda, no ha habido muchas novedades ahí fuera. Ha habido buenas y malas (incluso espantosas) colecciones, pero nada llamativo, incluso en casas como Marni y Lanvin, por nombrar dos. Yves Saint Laurent

Take off the wigs and the dark lips, and try imagining these clothes (well, maybe not the see-trough blouse!) on an elegant middle-aged "parisienne" and... it works. The concept is hard but the clothes are real.

Quitad las pelucas y los labios oscuros, e intentad imaginar estas prendas (bueno, ¡la blusa transparente tal vez no!) sobre una elegante "parisienne" de mediana edad... y funciona. El concepto es duro pero la ropa es real.

Well, it seems Miuccia likes guipure, doesn't she? But it will probably be a very influential collection, expect to see lace and orange paired with camel everywhere next season.

Bueno, parece que a Miuccia le gusta el guipur, ¿no? Pero seguramente será una colección muy influyente, esperaos a ver encajes y naranja combinado con camel por todas partes la próxima temporada.

Dior

Following the path of his cruise collection, John Galliano plays with the 60's and Las Vegas (think Ann Margret) with bright colors and ironic maxi-sequins that somehow manage to look cheap and glamorous at the same time, though i.m.h.o. some of the clothes themselves have a somewhat small-town-seamstress quality about them.

Siguiendo la senda de su colección de crucero, John Galliano juega con los 60 y Las Vegas (pensad Ann Margret) con colores brillantes e irónicas maxi-lentejuelas que de algún modo consiguen parecer baratas y glamurosas a la vez, aunque e.m.h.o. algunas prendas en sí tienen un aire como de modista de provincias.

Gucci

Frida Giannini takes bohemian-chic and mixes it with Russia, persian carpets and The Doors. Beautiful details and clothes that are both ethnic and sexy, which is quite difficult. It will probably sell like hot-cakes in Moscow.

Frida Giannini coge el chic bohemio y lo mezcla con Rusia, alfombras persas y The Doors. Detalles preciosos y ropa que es a la vez étnica y sexy, lo cual es bastante difícil. Seguramente se venda como rosquillas en Moscú.

Very english, it's all there: Queen Victoria, My Fair lady, King's Road, Bloomsbury, Helena Bonham-Carter... but actually what it reminds me of is a blend between Christian Lacroix and Vivenne Westwood.

Oscars 2008

Well, I wasn't going to write about the Oscars because there's already such a good coverage out there, but... what the hell. First of all congratulations to Javier Bardem (best supporting actor), looking handsome in Prada (?), though i.m.h.o. he looked better at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Marion Cotillard (best actress) wore a dramatic mermaid dress by Jean Paul Gaultier (not very flattering in the bust), it seems she's trying hard to prove that in real life she's actually pretty (she is). For me the best dressed was Jessica Alba, pregnant and in Marchesa. The color of the dress is just beautiful. Penelope Cruz was lovely in Chanel Haute Couture, though Di is right about the hair... not just right, and why the highlights, she's a gorgeous brunette! Two other good choices were both off-the-shoulder: Amy Ryan's Calvin Klein Collection (simple and elegant) and Hilary Swank's Atelier Versace. And last but not least... Diablo Cody (best original screenplay) in Dior. Well at least the girl has personality and is not overpowered by the dress!

Bueno, no iba a escribir sobre los Oscar porque ya hay una muy buena cobertura del evento allí fuera, pero... qué demonios. Lo primero: enhorabuena a Javier Bardem (mejor actor secundario), muy guapo de Prada (?) aunque e.m.h.o. iba mejor en los Premios de la Unión de Actores. Marion Cotillard (mejor actriz) llevó un espectacular vestido sirena de Jean Paul Gaultier (que no favorecía mucho al pecho), parece que se esfuerza en demostrar que en la vida real es una chica guapa (lo es). Para mí la mejor vestida era Jessica Alba, embarazada y de Marchesa. El color del vestido es sencillamente precioso. Penélope Cruz estaba monísima de Chanel Haute Couture, aunque Di tiene razón en lo del pelo... ¿y porqué esas mechas, si es una morena guapa de por sí! Dos aciertos, asimétricos ambos: el Calvin Klein Collection de Amy Ryan (sencillo y elegante) y el Atelier Versace de Hilary Swank. Y ya para finalizar... Diablo Cody de Dior (mejor guión original). Bueno, ¡por lo menos la chica tiene personalidad y el vestido no puede con ella!

Milano 2008

I'm back fom Milan. I was too shy to take pictures of people (besides, I'm not The Sartorialist) so I took some pictures of shop windows...

We went to a fabric trade show and for "shopping" (what en euphemism!). Of everything we saw my favorites were Prada and Saint Laurent. I thought Prada was surprisingly wearable, actually when I saw pictures of the runway I was somewhat doubtful about the collection, but the clothes are beautiful. Marni was also interesting (sorry, they don't really have a window... ) but kind of difficult. For the rest Milan is more glamourous than hip, as usual. Corso Como 10 divine (though their men's selection is really not my style) and disgustingly expensive.

Food was delicious, though we hardly went out we had dinner at "Paper Moon"... those papardelle! I think (hope) I gained some weight

Ya he vuelto de Milán. Me daba corte hacer fotos de gente (además, no soy The Sartorialist) así que hice fotos de escaparates...

Fuimos a una feria de tejidos y de "shopping" (¡que eufemismo!). De todo lo que vimos mis favoritos han sido Prada y Saint Laurent. Prada me pareció sorprendentemente llevable, de hecho cuando vi las fotos del desfile tenía mis dudas, pero la ropa es preciosa. Marni era interesante (lo siento, realmente no tienen escaparate como tal... ) pero un poco complicado. Por lo demás Milán es más glamuroso que moderno, como siempre. Corso Como 10 ideal (anque la selección de hombre no es nada mi estilo) y asquerosamente caro.

La comida deliciosa, aunque casi no salimos fuimos a cenar al "Paper Moon"... ¡esos papardelle! Creo (espero) haber ganado algo de peso.

Everytime I go to Milan it's Fool's Day... I mean... Valentine's Day.

Not a good red carpet year, but stars tried their best at the SAG awards. I like Julie Christie's smoking, she wears it quite casually and I think it's nice for a lady her age, and the hair looks good too. Bardem looks handsome, and I like Angelina's dress, though it doesn't seem too comfortable... Michelle Pfeiiffer looks very good in that simple Versace dress (it's a pity we're not seeing her in a good role for a while), so does Blanchett in a dress becoming for her state. The Nina Ricci dresses on Pompeo and Cotillard, though beautiful, are a bit overdress for what doesn't seem to be a black-tie event.

No es año de alfombras rojas, pero las estrellas se esforzaron para los premios de la Unión de Actores. Me gusta el smoking de Julie Christie, lo lleva sin pretensiones y creo que está bien para una señora de su edad, y el pelo le favorece. Bardem está guapo, y me gusta el vestido de Angelina, aunque no parece muy cómodo... Michelle Pfeiffer está muy guapa con ese sencillo Versace (que pena que no la veamos en un buen papel últimamente), y Blanchett también, en un vestido favorecedor en su estado. Los Nina Ricci de Pompeo y Cotillard, aunque bonitos, son un poco arreglados de más para lo que no parece ser una gala.
