Alvarno SS12

I've been impatient to write about it since I attended Alvarno's show Thursday evening, but I've been busy with a project I'm working on, that's another story I'll tell you about later. This show was the one (if not the only) event I was looking forward to in "Madrid Fashion Week". If I had a craving for glamour and luxury it is satisfied.

One of the definitions of this collection was "the Spirit of Paris and the Light of Madrid". Spirit and Light, seduction and elegance, purity and luxury, dream and reality, magnetic poles that attract themselves in the beautiful designs of Arnaud and Álvaro, two designers with a brilliant career in fashion and that have created their own path together, shooting like a star in Madrid's (let's admit it) dull fashion panorama, but with their feet well on the ground.

The collections subtle and neutral colors -black, ivory, a very light soft taupe- highlighted the masterly draping and cut, the luxurious crêpe-de-chine and peau d'ange, keeping away from obvious references and focussing on an array of breathtaking cocktail and evening dresses. There was just the right touch of eccentricity in the accessories and details, made of a extremely fine metallic and glass bead crochet, bracelets, necklaces, brooches, shoulder pads (somewhat reminiscent of Balenciaga's "torero" jackets), even a transparent short dress made entirely using this technique, in soft peach and yellow, that achieved what seems almost impossible, to be at the same time absolutely sexy and elegant at the same time.

Gratis Total has a great post with all these details at Trendencias, and don't miss Alvarno's official website for more information.

***

Spongeblog / Blog Esponja

Yesteday I went to Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week, really just a cheap excuse to behave like Edina & Patsy in between shows in the Grey Goose-sponsered "kissing-room", where we coined the phrase "Spongeblog": write about fashion (optional) while drinking cocktails (necessary).

Di, Raquel, Lucio, Plutónico, Alejandra (on of the few actual buyers there) and myself were lather joined by ace76, amidst persistent rumors that the ever-mysterious Mr. Q was in the room (rumors fueled even further by Plutónico being mistaken, intentionally or not, for him). Kina Fernández's after-show cocktail was quite nice, it had violet liqueur and cranberry juice (a purple Cosmo, if you will), and another ingredient I can't remember. I should have kept the recipe, since it was hanging on the cute little paper tag around the stem of the glass... anyway.

I did see one show since I managed to wriggle into Ana Locking thanks to a lovely young lady who's name I have unfortunately forgotten (I have to ask Raquel, I'm a disaster with names). The show... well, the color combinations were appealing and there were some nice ideas, specially the evening dresses that could be good red carpet options for a young actress. Some of the day wear (specially the men's) I personally found a bit far-fetched and not that wearable, a lot of color block and asymmetrical panels and pleats, a little bit Ghesquière/Elbaz-esque perhaps... or maybe I'm being picky. I wasn't that picky with what we were awarded with after the show: a vodka-kahlua concoction in a tall glass... Hm, I wonder if I can get a blogger pass next season so I can make a serious post about the Madrid Fashion Week cocktails... oh, and about the shows, of course...

Lomanissimo

Last week-end I went to the Madrid Fashion Week, a little bit by accident because my friend Ana had invitations for Antonio Alvarado's show on saturday, and because Di told me she would be there, and it turned out to be a blogger summit because Di told me that Raquel (Gratis Total) would also be there, which was exciting because we had never met in person before. Anyways, one thing let to another and Di and Raquel gave me their invitations for the Miriam Ocariz show on the next day. I hadn't attended for a couple of seasons and this was a special occasion, I had a great time running into people I hadn't seen for a while and sipping after-show cocktails in the "kissing room". I was lucky because apparently some of those they had served earlier tasted like Listerine or like Snuggle...
I also sat at a show with Casandra and ran into Doublecloth, and missed Hummingbird and Miss a la Playa by an inch because Manuel (from the cool menswear brand García Madrid) and I where being whisked into Ana Locking's show -without invitations- by a friend. And I met Lucio! Lucio exists. Lucio is the new black. Di, Plutónico, Lucio and I ended up having another drink and lively conversation about two very important topics, clothes and men. It's so funny because without knowing each other we knew each other (you see, what I mean, don't you?)...

Raquel took the picture above on saturday when we were leaving. We had been seeing celebrity socialite Carmen Lomana all day, on the front row of the shows and being photographed with every teen-ager/fashion-design-student, but I was too shy to ask (well, yes) though my friend Ana and I kind of wanted to. But then, just when stepped out we saw she was going towards her car and grabbed our chance. Though she was probably cold and in a hurry she obliged, and Raquel took this great snapshot of us. I must say Raquel is such a good photographer; I usually dislike myself in pictures, but well, I think I look reasonably good.
And... it's not that I am strictly speaking one this lady's many fans, but I've seen interviews and I think she's clever, beautiful, rich, free and she does what she wants, and in a way I think there is a different person behind this very studied image, someone very intelligent and maybe also someone sad.

Oh, yes, the shows... I liked Antonio Alvarado, his palette was more restrained than usual, and shapes were interestingly architectural. Miriam Ocariz was nice, her usual cute style, very feminine and wearable, though the poor models were struggling with their shoes. And Ana Locking... I don't know, I think she has done some very good shows but this time I just... I didn't like it. It's just my opinion and it's pretty worthless, but some of my friends were hurt. Well, I'm sorry, maybe I was too harsh when I said that the long printed dresses reminded me of Matthew Williamson for H&M, but just look at the image below. On the left, Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton SS09, on the right Ana Locking AW11. Judge for yourself.

In a way there's something wrong with Madrid Fashion Week (supposedly the fourth most important one in the world, which leaves either New York or London out, not to mention Rio, São Paulo or Mumbai): many of the designers who show their collections don't have any industrial or retail structure to back them up. I, as an anonymous designer in a large fashion company, have probably much more people wearing my designs than them. I am not saying this against the designers, if they have talent they deserve to have industrial backing, it's the whole organization that is absurd.
Or eventually their show (which is partly paid with public money) is just a promotion for their booming licensing for anything from stationary to hand towels, because they have the right media and political connections. Oh, and don't even dare criticizing, it's... I don't know, unpatriotic. So if it isn't to promote Spain's fashion industry, what the hell is it for? I'm not saying that there isn't talented designers -unfortunately many of them are left out of this circus or have to go abroad to be acknowledged- or that Spain doesn't have it's contribution in fashion, you just need to think of Cristóbal Balenciaga, Loewe... or Zara. But until this event isn't a real showcase for Spanish fashion's industry and talent it is just as useless as... half a pair of Manolos.

¡Y conocí a Lucio! Lucio existe.

Déjà-vu

I always thought that Marios Schwab was on of those talented London-based designers, someone with an real personal view, conceptual enough to keep his collections interesting but still with a foot well set in the reality of this business. I can't say that his first collection for Halston was disappointing, it featured some of the house's trademarks: the colors, the fluidity, the draping. An other completely different question is if this house has enough identity to successfully be relaunched. However talented Roy Halston was his style was maybe too representative of a specific era, so as to say it is burdened from being so emblematic.
And... I don't know if it's just me, but if you stand a couple of feet away from your screen and give it a side-eye, don't some of the designs remind you of what the designer of a very historic parisian house did a couple of seasons ago?
(I'll let you guess.)

Update: to be fair, I loved his own show in London.

Half an apple - Media manzana

That must be what models eat, if you look closely at the pictures and leave out the clothes, the make-up, the lights, and look only at their bodies. Clothes look good on slim models, we know that, but aren't we going too far? I mean, being thin (even very thin) is one thing, being plain skinny is another, and some of the girls look like they're sick... unfortunately they probably have to be like that if they want to do another runway than Versace (by the way, Carmen Kass looked great).
Please someone give them a bacon sandwich!

2008/09

Well, now that the fall runways are over, all I can say is: how unexciting. Maybe because of the lurking crisis, or because we're in a transitional fashion moment, there hasn't been much new out there. There's been good and bad (even terrible) collections, but nothing striking, even at houses like Marni or Lanvin, just to name two. Since deep down I'm a minimalist I decided to pick only six collections and a few looks from each. You can see all the rest here.

Balenciaga
Nicholas Ghesquière explores the Spanish heritage of the house, and continues investigating in the direction he took in his spring collection. Masterly structured or fluid draping, architectural cuts, sometimes adorned with "Samurai" prints.

Yves Saint Laurent
Take off the wigs and the dark lips, and try imagining these clothes (well, maybe not the see-trough blouse!) on an elegant middle-aged "parisienne" and... it works. The concept is hard but the clothes are real.

Prada
Well, it seems Miuccia likes guipure, doesn't she? But it will probably be a very influential collection, expect to see lace and orange paired with camel everywhere next season.

Dior
Following the path of his cruise collection, John Galliano plays with the 60's and Las Vegas (think Ann Margret) with bright colors and ironic maxi-sequins that somehow manage to look cheap and glamorous at the same time, though i.m.h.o. some of the clothes themselves have a somewhat small-town-seamstress quality about them.

Gucci
Frida Giannini takes bohemian-chic and mixes it with Russia, persian carpets and The Doors. Beautiful details and clothes that are both ethnic and sexy, which is quite difficult. It will probably sell like hot-cakes in Moscow.

Alexander McQueen
Very english, it's all there: Queen Victoria, My Fair lady, King's Road, Bloomsbury, Helena Bonham-Carter... but actually what it reminds me of is a blend between Christian Lacroix and Vivenne Westwood.

Kübler-Ross vs. Karl Lagerfeld

In her book "On Death and Dying" psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Loss describes five stages of the process of grief in patients diagnosed with terminal illness or persons who suffer some kind of loss. These stages can also apply to other traumatic experiences, such as Chanel's last Couture show by our dear Kaiser.

It's a Chanel show, it can't be that bad, look, they even have the nice classic suits...

Anger - Ira

What the ...., who is this for, the hunchback of Notre-Dame?

Bargaining - Regateo
Well, this dress is kind of nice, maybe if the rest of the collection was like that...

Oh my God, this is too strange, I don't understand it, maybe it's me...

No, it could be beautiful but...

No, podría ser bonito pero...

Burberry Prorsum 08/09

Burberry Prorsum fall 08 collection by Cristopher Bailey, inspired by L. S. Lowry, and also by Oliver Twist, it seems to me... I love the coats, the bag, the sweater in the last picture, I wonder a bit about the cut of the pants though.
Seeing the models I'm lucky because we lankies are in!

YSL 08

A look at Stefano Pilati's spring 08 collection for Yves Saint Laurent and I'll stop talking about him for a little while, I promise... I chose some of my favorite looks, which are also maybe the least obvious.

This shiny trench reminds me somehow of the original YSL Catherine Deneuve wore in "Belle de Jour"

I am fascinated by this use of what seems to be classic sweatshirt fabric, I can't wait to go to the store and touch it!

I love the combination of this "Rive Gauche" shades of blue with grey and beige. It's so clean, apparently simple, yet at the same time so new.

This is masterly technique of cut, the balance between fitted and fluid.

I also found this suble and somewhat ironic use of the YSL logo interesting.
