The African Connection

I know I didn't need to, but in a way I had to... On the left, Gucci, Spring 2011, as seen on the cover of Air France Madame magazine. On the right, Yves Saint Laurent, Spring 1967, worn by the divine Alek Wek at the 2002 retrospective show.

Under The Influence

As so often lately, when I saw this fashion story photographed by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia I first loved it, but after a while the usual uncomfortable thought started to creep in. It is clear that Yves Saint Laurent's influence not only hasn't diminished after his death but it is every day stronger. Of course he put the pantsuit on the fashion map, and that can be considered a legacy, just as the leopard print (which he didn't invent, it was already used in the late XVIIIth century, but he certainly gave it a new life), the use of ethnic motifs and cultural references and his daring color combinations, only surpassed maybe by Lacroix in the 80's.

Maybe Marc Jacobs is honest when he channels YSL (his Resort 2009 collection is the clearest example, but not the only one), and maybe Frida Giannini's heavily influenced Spring 2011 collection for Gucci (1967's african collection collection, anyone?) had nothing to do with rumors at the time of Stephano Pilati's insecure position in the house (which fortunately for him turned out to be unproven), but aren't some designer going too far? Where is the line between a heartfelt tribute and a merciless re-hash? What is wrong with fashion that we can't envision something without resorting to the safety of past decades? Opinions, please.

Quiz

Yes, I know I've left this blog completely abandoned, partly because I've been away enjoying my holidays, and partly because I've been thinking over what this blog means for me and what should I really do with it... I'll let you know when I've come to a conclusion.

In any case, to start this new season I have something I think might be be fun, a little quiz. Of course the gentleman in the picture is Yves, and the models beside him are Mercedes and Mounia... but who is the little boy in the harlequin costume (I'll have to think of a prize for the first to guess... and those of you who know the answer beforehand please keep quiet!)

(Hint: this was published in July 1979... as if you didn't know that it's the Picasso collection!)

Yves

Yves Saint Laurent said "I have always placed respect for this profession above all else - it is not altogether an art, but it requires an artist to exist."

Art or not, it doesn't matter, but there is no doubt that he was an artist. He didn't make dresses, he created emotions. Every dress in the exhibition at the Petit Palais had a story to tell, some had been part of the life of real women, others had been a dream, or a symbol, materialized through genius, hard work, the joy and anguish of creation.

I usually don't get very emotional, but what I felt going through those rooms I can hardly explain, in my mind I compare it to listening to Bach's cello suites, something close to a spiritual experience maybe. "It's just fashion", you might say. Yes, but great fashion is made of the fabric, not of dreams, but of life.

I would have needed one whole week to take in everything I saw, I kept going back and forth through the rooms not wanting to leave! Not to mention two enormous pictures of my mother by Hans Feurer, wearing the 1971 "40's" collection as they came out in the newspapers causing a scandal. Since taking photos was not allowed I took some notes to try to retain at least those things that made a stronger impression: the gray wool "Trapèze" from his time at Dior, the famous jet embroidered cocktail dress worn by Mme. López-Willshaw, the simple "Belle de Jour"... and so many others. And suddenly, a simple white dress with a gazar coat, also white, trimmed with ostrich feathers, from 2001. There it was, so simple, so true, just a piece of cloth on a dummy, and yet... well, I guess this is Proust's madeleine for me!

Of course other things happened over the week-end, but I will leave that for the next post...

No hacía vestidos, creaba emociones.

Well...

I'm going to be completely honest: I'm not sure I really understood Pilati's last show for YSL, but then again maybe it's one of those collections that you need to see a few times before they sink in. I loved the shoes and some of the ensembles, specially the ones contructed around pencil skirts. A white tunic with a pink skirt was very elegant in a minimalist way. But I don't know, the strawberries and the knee-slits I thought a bit strange...
In any case I am aware that seeing the clothes in the store is going to be something completely different (as I said before about Prada and Marni, for instance), the runway looks are very experimental but translate into very beautiful and wearable clothes. And he's good looking so I am going to forgive him. By the way, are those new tattoos on his arms?

(And what was going on about Japan in the comments to my last post? I have to investigate this... )

Adieu Yves.

This morning brought very sad news: Yves Saint Laurent died yesterday evening in Paris. He one was one the last great masters of fashion and an artist, true to his beliefs, who retired (like Balenciaga before him) when he no longer agreed with the mercantilism of the actual fashion system. He has died, but he leaves a legacy of beauty and elegance.

I know I have to excuse myself once more for this long absence, but last week was my my first week at my new job, and the one before the last one at my old job. Everything is very exciting of course, but exhausting too, so unfortunately I can't be expected to update much or visit all of your blogs as much as I would like to... but I'll do my best to be around once a week or so, I promise!

And something happy: we have tickets for Madonna's concert in Lisbon in september, Di, Haquiles and I. We never would have got the tickets without Di's help so thank you, you are an angel.

Sountrack: Vivaldi "Vanum est vobis", James Bowman (countertenor), The Academy Of Ancient Music.

2008/09

Well, now that the fall runways are over, all I can say is: how unexciting. Maybe because of the lurking crisis, or because we're in a transitional fashion moment, there hasn't been much new out there. There's been good and bad (even terrible) collections, but nothing striking, even at houses like Marni or Lanvin, just to name two. Since deep down I'm a minimalist I decided to pick only six collections and a few looks from each. You can see all the rest here.

Balenciaga
Nicholas Ghesquière explores the Spanish heritage of the house, and continues investigating in the direction he took in his spring collection. Masterly structured or fluid draping, architectural cuts, sometimes adorned with "Samurai" prints.

Yves Saint Laurent
Take off the wigs and the dark lips, and try imagining these clothes (well, maybe not the see-trough blouse!) on an elegant middle-aged "parisienne" and... it works. The concept is hard but the clothes are real.

Prada
Well, it seems Miuccia likes guipure, doesn't she? But it will probably be a very influential collection, expect to see lace and orange paired with camel everywhere next season.

Dior
Following the path of his cruise collection, John Galliano plays with the 60's and Las Vegas (think Ann Margret) with bright colors and ironic maxi-sequins that somehow manage to look cheap and glamorous at the same time, though i.m.h.o. some of the clothes themselves have a somewhat small-town-seamstress quality about them.

Gucci
Frida Giannini takes bohemian-chic and mixes it with Russia, persian carpets and The Doors. Beautiful details and clothes that are both ethnic and sexy, which is quite difficult. It will probably sell like hot-cakes in Moscow.

Alexander McQueen
Very english, it's all there: Queen Victoria, My Fair lady, King's Road, Bloomsbury, Helena Bonham-Carter... but actually what it reminds me of is a blend between Christian Lacroix and Vivenne Westwood.

Soundtrack: Jazz pianist Jacques Loussier plays Bach's Prélude nº1.

Katoucha

I guess by now you know, former supermodel Katoucha is reported missing after attending a party last friday. Her purse was found near the houseboat under the "Alexandre III" bridge in Paris where she lived, police thinks she might have fallen accidentally into the Seine.
The 47 year old Guinean beauty, know as "the Peul Princess" (though she was from an educated middle-class family) was one of the famous black models to grace Yves Saint Laurent's Haute Couture shows. She was also an activist against female mutilation in Africa.

YSL 08

A look at Stefano Pilati's spring 08 collection for Yves Saint Laurent and I'll stop talking about him for a little while, I promise... I chose some of my favorite looks, which are also maybe the least obvious.

This shiny trench reminds me somehow of the original YSL Catherine Deneuve wore in "Belle de Jour"

I am fascinated by this use of what seems to be classic sweatshirt fabric, I can't wait to go to the store and touch it!

I love the combination of this "Rive Gauche" shades of blue with grey and beige. It's so clean, apparently simple, yet at the same time so new.

This is masterly technique of cut, the balance between fitted and fluid.

I also found this suble and somewhat ironic use of the YSL logo interesting.

Stars have always been a typical Yves Saint Laurent ornament, used here in a completely new way.

Pilati the Prophet - Pilati el Profeta

Stefano Pilati's collections for Yves Saint Laurent can seem understated, somewhere between conceptual and wearable, edgy but with a hint of old-fashioned parisian chic.
A closer look will reveal that it is the balance of all this elements, together with the precision of cut and exquisite attention to detail, that makes them so modern and still respectful of their heritage.

It's funny how often thing we have seen on the YSL runway show up on other shows a couple of seasons later... like this oversized gingham skirt is from the spring 2007 collection.

For spring 2008 Frida Giannini at Gucci used a similar fabric...

and Cristopher Bailey at Burberry Prorsum made this skirt. OK, they're supposed to be oversized Burberry checks in black and white, but still...
