It Happened In Paris

Two times a year, in February and September, we travel to Paris for work, mainly to see the "Première Vision" fabric fair and do some shopping. Nothing much new at the fair for Fall/Winter 12/13 (the suppliers are playing it safe in this times of crisis), though there seems to be a return to classic tweeds and plaid patterns. Color wise, chartreuse and dusty mauve with warm earthy colors and a touch of bright vermillion had a certain mid-century feel, following the 40's and 50's trend.

Anyway, one exciting thing did happen during this trip: we were walking along St. Honoré and as we were looking at the Lanvin shop window there he was, Alber Elbaz in person, supervising and, yes, lending a helping hand. After a first moment of excitement we pulled ourselves together and entered the store calmly, keeping an eye on the window more than looking at the clothes. My friend Flor went up to him to tell him how much she admired him, and as we made our way out he waved good-bye at us. The nicest thing is that this man, who is undoubtedly one of the most important designers of our time, is down-to-earth enough to be involved even in the window display of his store. It takes real genius to be humble.

And in a breach of my "no-street-style" policy I'm posting a picture of Flor, she was too lovely.

Waiting....

No, not waiting for Pilati (also), but for something much more important: we're about to welcome a new member in our family any day now, I'll keep you posted.

In any case, I'm more and more into writing whatever I want, all this blogger competitiveness about how many daily visits you get and all that, phew... as Phillipe VI de Valois said: "Qui m'aime me suive". I keep saying how weary I am with fashion sometimes (really) and seeing all the shows, which is something I have to do for my work, is quite tiresome. I still think it is not as it used to be, fashion has become too much like corporate business and less like art, but still, once in a while true talent shines through to bring back some illusion into our lives.

Nicolas Ghesquière, the futurist. Beautiful colors, incredible materials, experimental cuts, but no suits, no evening dresses as such, almost nothing that can be considered a conventional item of clothing (not until it hits the stores in any case), nothing you can imagine on a red carpet. Still one knows it will be influential. It's strange, but it will be real some day. It's like trying to understand Einstein's theories. Don't try, just accept it.

Alber Elbaz, the magician. Creating a world of dreams with his feet well grounded in the real world, he explores his origins and the contradictions of the modern woman between glamour and power. His usual repertoire takes a new ethnic, tougher, turn. Who else could play this magic trick to make us see leopard when it is in reality lace? But this magic only works on this side of the looking-glass. As a future ambassador for UNICEF Elbaz might think, as we might, that a water pump in an african village is far more beautiful that the most beautiful of dresses. Frivolous? I don't think so. Dreams are necessary, reality even more so.

Runway to Reality?

Every now and then magazines publish an article on how to make those seemingly impossible clothes we see on the runways work in everyday life: just pair that Balenciaga jacket with a pair of jeans... et voilá! Things in reality don't work that nicely, even a simple dress straight off the rack somehow doesn't look the same as on the model, sometimes a bit vulgar, sometimes too conventional or simply boring.

Malin Ackerman in Miu-Miu (?)

Dr. Lisa Airan in Lanvin

Shirin von Wulffen in Dior

Serena Nikkhah in Fendi

Daisy Lowe in Burberry Prorsum

I'll avoid sharp comments, after all these are just real people like you and me... though dr. Airan remind me of Melissa Agretti in "Falcon Crest" (and miss Ackerman would have done better going to H&M).

I wonder what these two are laughing about...

Back to work - Vuelta al trabajo

Today was back to work. I made this little "self-portrait" a while ago and it expresses quite well how it felt. (I know Ana is going to be nag me because she's always saying I have to be positive...)

Anyways, in a survey by Sky Movies and In Style magazine, this green dress designed by Jacqueline Durran and worn by Keira Knightley in the film "Atonement" was voted "best film costume ever". Second was the white dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in "The Seven Year Itch" and third was the black Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
The dress is beautiful but I'm not sure I agree... time will tell.

--------------------

And since we're mentioning In Style, they had this other poll at their website about cocktail dresses with leggings (!) now that they are on their way out.

Oddly, Jennifer Connelly, in Lanvin, was the least voted. I like the dress, the leggings are maybe a bit sheer, what do you think?

Drew Barrymore, in Calvin Klein Collection, looks cute, of course black almost always works.

And we've seen this image of Sienna Miller a million times, also in Calvin Klein Collection.
