Vive la Reine!

One of my favorite movies last year was Sophia Coppola's "Marie-Antoinette". I know some people hated it, and the last thing I want is to start a heated argument, I'll just say I saw it 3 times and enjoyed each one of them. Maybe partly because I have a special affinity with the unfortunate last Queen of France because she was beheaded exactly 175 years before I was born! 

In 1783 Marie Louise Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun portrayed Marie-Antoinette wearing the famous "chemise dress" designed by Rose Bertin, which was deemed so scandalous at the time that a second portrait had to be painted with the Queen wearing a proper court dress. The "austrian" was a trendsetter, in those days fashion travelled from Court to street, not the other way around...

Allegedly her last words as she climbed on the scaffold and stepped on her executioner's foot were: "I beg your pardon, monsieur, I did not do it on purpose"... it might just be a myth, but isn't it grand?

Una de mis películas favoritas del año pasado fue "María-Antonieta" de Sophia Coppola. Ya sé que algunos la han odiado y lo último que quiero es empezar una polémica, sólo diré que la he visto 3 veces y he disfrutado cada una de ellas. Quizás en parte porque tengo una afinidad especial con la desafortunada última Reina de Francia ¡ya que fue decapitada exactamente 175 años antes de nacer yo!

En 1783 Marie Louise Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun retrató a María-Antonieta luciendo la famosa "robe chemise" diseñada por Rose Bertin, lo cual fué tan escandaloso para su época que se tuvo que pintar un segundo retrato de la Reina con un adecuado vestido de corte. La "austríaca" era una precursora, en esos días la moda iba de la corte a la calle, y no al revés...

Se dice que sus últimas palabras al subir al cadalso, cuando pisó el pie del verdugo, fueron: "Le pido perdón, monsieur, lo hice sin querer"... puede que solo sea un mito, ¿pero no es regio?

Future Zen master - Futuro maestro Zen

As you maybe realized, as soon as I publish a couple of posts about fashion I need to jump to something else. I have a joke with my friend Itzel Bunchen (I need to write a long post about her!) that in my old days I will be a Zen master, sitting under a japanese maple, it's fiery leaves falling around me, in front of a tea-house that of course would be very wabi-sabi. 

In the meantime here is one of my modest haikus:

The wind is shaking

the boughs of the cherry tree.

It's snowing petals.

Si os habéis dado cuenta, en cuanto publico un par de entradas sobre moda tengo que saltar a otra cosa. Tengo una broma con mi amiga Itzel Bunchen (¡tengo que dedicarlo un largo post!) que de mayor seré un maestro Zen, sentado bajo un arce japonés, sus hojas color fuego cayendo a mi alrededor, delante de una casa de té que por supuesto sería muy wabi-sabi*.

I think that precisely the japanese have such a pure sense of style because of Zen philosophy. Since I'm talking about Japan, a few things japanese or japan-related:
