It has been a persisting rumor, but now it is official: Alessandra Facchinetti has been replaced as creative director at Valentino by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. According to Valentino "they always demonstrated an enormous respect and love for my work. There is an existing archive with thousands of dresses where they can [...] take inspiration from to create a Valentino product that is relevant today. It is a shame that their predecessor didn't feel this need".
Well, isn't this an inelegant thing to say? It seems that Valentino's ego is as puffed up as his hairstyle and that he prefers to have puppets as heirs than a designer... maybe someone should remind him what the word "retiring" means. In the meantime Alessandra Facchinetti smiles graciously as the takes her final bow at the show earlier this week, or maybe she's happy to take such weight off her shoulders...
(I must add that of course I admire Valentino for his work, it just seems to me that this gesture is unworthy of his talent, some things, even if they are true, are better left untold...)
