"Sous l'Empire des Crinolines"

I forgot completely to write about one of the most interesting things about our trip to Paris... on the day we went "shopping" we went first thing in the morning to see the exhibition "Sous l'Empire des Crinolines" at the Musée Galliera. We actually had to sneak out to go and see it, which I think is stupid, because I think it was a great source of inspiration, more than going to any silly shop, but anyways...

Me olvidé completamente de escribir sobre lo más interesante de nuestro viaje a París... el día que fuimos de "shopping" fuimos por la mañana a ver la exposición "Sous l'Empire des Crinolines" en el Musée Galliera. De hecho tuvimos que ir de tapadillo, lo cual me parece estúpido porque creo que era interesante e inspirador, más que ir a cualquier tienda chorra, pero bueno...

I must say I have been fascinated by crinolines ever since I first saw "Gone With The WInd", there's something with the billowing fullness of those skirts that I find just... beautiful. Of course they're uncomfortable and unpractical, but so are 8 inch high heels, no?

Debo decir que me han fascinado los miriñaques desde que vi por primera vez "Lo que el viento se llevó", hay algo en esas vaporosas y voluminosas faldas que encuentro simplemente... bello. Claro que son incómodas y poco prácticas, pero también lo son unos tacones de 15 cm, ¿no?

The interesting thing about this exhibition, apart from showing beautiful dresses, was that it put them in context, depicting a time (between 1850 and 1870) when the concept of fashion was changing into it's modern shape, though contradictorily retaining an aesthetic from the past. Those changes had started before the French Revolution: new fashions sprang up every year, colors were favored one season and shunned the next, fashion plates circulated to show the new trends, and fashion itself started to permeate through all social classes. It was said that in the late XVIIIth century even kitchen maids in Paris were "chic".

Lo interesante de esta exposición, aparte de enseñar preciosos vestidos, era que los ponía en su contexto, mostrando una época (entre 1850 y 1870) en la que el concepto de la moda estaba tomando su forma moderna, aún reteniendo de forma contradictoria una estética del pasado. Esos cambios habían comenzado antes de la Revolución Francesa: nuevas modas aparecían cada año, el color que enloquecía una temporada estaba pasado la siguiente, láminas de moda circulaban para mostrar las nuevas tendencias, y la moda en sí empezó a calar en todas las clases sociales. Se decía que a finales del siglo XVIII hasta las sirvientas en París eran "chic".

But the changes that took place in the mid XIXth century were of a different kind.

In earlier decades more and more clothing items could be purchased over the counter, and what we now know as "separates" started to be usual item's in a lady's wardrobe. The invention of the sewing machine and the new ways of manufacturing fabrics industrialized the clothing trade. This saw an even greater development with the opening of department stores. In Paris, at the same time that Haussmann was building a new dream city for the bourgeoisie, stores like "Le Bon Marché" (the first parisian department store, opened in 1838, two decades before the medieval city was torn down to make place for the new grand avenues), "Le Printemps" (1865) and "La Paix" (1869) catered the fashion-thirsty, bourgoises and noble alike, they even gave the illusion of "faux luxe" for the less fortunate. For those who couldn't afford the heavy silks from Lyon there were "éttofes-réclame", showy fabrics at lower prices, and these early temples of consumerism didn't sell fabrics only, but put under one roof everything that small "boutiques" had to offer: parasols, gloves, fabric flowers, ribbons, stockings, shoes, perfumes and what-not.

En décadas anteriores cada vez más artículos de vestir se podían comprar en tiendas, y lo que ahora se conoce como "separates" empezaron a ser comunes en el vestuario de una señora. La invención de la máquina de coser y las nuevas formas de tejer industrializaron el sector de la confección. Esto se desarrolló aún más con la apertura de los grandes almacenes. En París, a la vez que Haussmann estaba construyendo la cuidad ideal para la burguesía, almacenes como "Le Bon Marché" (el primer almacén parisino, abierto en 1838, dos decadas antes de que la cuidad medieval fuera derribada para dejar paso a las grandes avenidas), "Le Printemps" (1865) y "La Paix" (1869) atendían las necesidades de burguesas y nobles sedientas de moda, incluso daban la ilusión del "faux luxe" a las menos afortunadas. Para las que no podían pagar las pesadas sedas de Lyon había "éttofes-réclame", tejidos aparentes a precios más bajos, y en esos primeros templos del consumismo no se vendía sólo tela, sino que bajo un mismo techo se podía encontrar todo lo que las pequeñas "boutiques" podían ofrecer: parasoles, guantes, flores artificiales, cintas, medias, calzado, perfume y demás.

Another change, on the opposite side of the spectrum, was the rise of the fashion designer as renown artist instead of obscure artisan (with the exception only of Rose Bertin, Marie Antoinette's "Ministre de la Mode"). Charles Frederick Worth was the first dressmaker to use models to show his creations, and the first to put a label with his name inside his garments. He was also the first to gain international fame, dressing not only the Empress Eugénie and princess Metternich, but also the fashionable and wealthy from as far as New York or Buenos Aires. It would be another few decades, however, until the time of Poiret and Chanel, that fashion designers could step up from the status of mere suppliers and gain enough social recognition to mingle with their famous clients. But that's another story...

Otro cambio, en el polo opuesto, fue el nacimiento del diseñador de moda como artista reconocido, y no sólo como mero artesano (con la única excepción de Rose Bertin, la "Ministre de la Mode" de María Antonieta). Charles Frederick Worth fue el primer modista en usar modelos para mostrar sus creaciones, y el primero en poner una etiqueta son su nombre en las prendas. Fue también el primero en conseguir fama internacional, vistiendo no solo a la Emperatriz Eugenia y a la princesa Metternich, sino también a las ricas y elegantes que llegaban desde tan lejos como Nueva York o Buenos Aires. Aún así, tendrían que pasar varias décadas, hasta la época de Poiret y Chanel, para que los diseñadores ascendieran del status de meros proveedores y ganaran suficiente reconocimiento social para codearse con sus famosas clientas. Pero esa es otra historia...
