Kübler-Ross vs. Karl Lagerfeld

In her book "On Death and Dying" psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Loss describes five stages of the process of grief in patients diagnosed with terminal illness or persons who suffer some kind of loss. These stages can also apply to other traumatic experiences, such as Chanel's last Couture show by our dear Kaiser.

En su libro "On Death and Dying" la psicóloga Elisabeth Kübler-Ross decribe cince fases del proceso del dolor en pacientes diagnosticados con enfermedades terminales o personas que sufren algún tipo de pérdida. Estas fases se pueden aplicar a otras experiencias traumáticas, como el último desfile de Alta Costura de Chanel por nuestro querido Kaiser.

Not a good red carpet year, but stars tried their best at the SAG awards. I like Julie Christie's smoking, she wears it quite casually and I think it's nice for a lady her age, and the hair looks good too. Bardem looks handsome, and I like Angelina's dress, though it doesn't seem too comfortable... Michelle Pfeiiffer looks very good in that simple Versace dress (it's a pity we're not seeing her in a good role for a while), so does Blanchett in a dress becoming for her state. The Nina Ricci dresses on Pompeo and Cotillard, though beautiful, are a bit overdress for what doesn't seem to be a black-tie event.

No es año de alfombras rojas, pero las estrellas se esforzaron para los premios de la Unión de Actores. Me gusta el smoking de Julie Christie, lo lleva sin pretensiones y creo que está bien para una señora de su edad, y el pelo le favorece. Bardem está guapo, y me gusta el vestido de Angelina, aunque no parece muy cómodo... Michelle Pfeiffer está muy guapa con ese sencillo Versace (que pena que no la veamos en un buen papel últimamente), y Blanchett también, en un vestido favorecedor en su estado. Los Nina Ricci de Pompeo y Cotillard, aunque bonitos, son un poco arreglados de más para lo que no parece ser una gala.

La Notte

A beautiful scene from Michelangelo Antonioni's "La Notte" (1960), with the incredible Jeanne Moreau and Marcello Mastroianni.

The clip is it's original italian version, but the dialogue in itself -though excellent- in not fundamental to understand the scene. The scarce conversation thinly covers the characters' difficulty to communicate.

The show is not always on the stage...

Buttons - Botones

Buttons started to be used for fastening in Europe around the XIIIth century, and I once read an interesting theory about why men's garments fasten from left to right and women's fasten the other way:

Men's clothes have historically tended to be more simple, and men had to be able to dress themselves, not only because they led more independent lives, but also for practical reasons (a soldier had to fasten his own doublet, and pants need to open in front, obviously). They would find it easier to hold the overlapping part of the garment with their left hand and manipulate the button through the buttonholes with the right, making the garment fasten left to right.

On the other hand women's clothes were much more elaborate and often fastened in the back, and usually needed the help of a chamber-maid, who would also hold the overlap with her left hand and fasten the buttons with her right, but on an other person, making the garment fasten right over left.

I don't know if this is true or not, maybe you have your own theory?

Los botones se empezaron a utilizar para abrochar en Europa alrededor del siglo XIII, y una vez leí una interesante teoría sobre porqué las prendas masculinas se abrochan de izquierda a derecha y las femeninas al revés:

Las prendas masculinas históricamente han tendido a ser más sencillas, y los hombres tenían que poder vestirse solos, no sólo por su forma de vida más independiente sino también por razones prácticas (un soldado tenía que abrochar su propia casaca y los pantalones se tienen que abrir por delante, claro está). Les resultaría más fácil sostener la parte de la prenda que cruza con la izquierda y pasar el botón por el ojal con la derecha, haciendo que la prenda se cierre de izquierda a derecha.

La ropa femenina en cambio era más complicada y a menudo se abrochaba en la espalda, y solía requerir la ayuda de una doncella, que también sostendría el cruce con la izquierda y abrocharía los botones con la derecha, pero sobre otra persona, haciendo que la prenda cierre de derecha a izquierda.

No sé si será verdad ¿tal vez tienes tu propia teoría?

One of my favorite books, that became one of my favorite films. The book was written by Choderlos de Laclos and published in 1782. In epistolary form, letter by letter, the gallant intrigue tightens around it's victims like a velvet anaconda. The descriptions of the characters and of the libertine manners of the High Society in pre-revolutionary France are perfect.

Uno de mis libros favoritos, que se ha convertido en una de mis películas favoritas. El libro fue escrito por Chodelos de Laclos y publicado en 1782. De forma epistolar, carta a carta, le intriga galante aprisiona a sus víctimas como una anaconda de terciopelo. Las descripciones de los personajes y de los modos libertinos de la Alta Sociedad en la Francia pre-revolucionaria son perfectas.

The film, directed by Stephen Frears in 1988, based on the play by Christopher Hampton (based on the book, of course) is a masterpiece of intrigue and timing. The intelligent use of close-up on the actors faces (and the fairly unobtrusive hair and make-up) makes the display of their emotions contemporary and identifiable.

Filmed on location with only natural light, visually it is as beautiful as accurate.

The costumes are painstakingly exact and faithful to the era. The action takes place not at the actual time of the book, but something like a generation earlier. I love the way Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer) is slightly out of fashion -as opposed to the very fashionable Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close)- and her use of the "robe à l'anglaise" in her walks in the Chateau's park, almost an equivalent of today's casual... remember this was much before Rose Bertin created those flimsy chemise dresses for Marie-Antionette.

La película, dirigida por Stephen Frears en 1988, basada en la obra de Christopher Hampton (basada en el libro, claro) es una obra maestra de intriga y ritmo. El uso inteligente de primeros planos de los rostros de los actores (así como el uso bastante discreto del maquillaje) hace que sus emociones sean contemporáneas e identificables.

Rodada en escenarios reales y con luz natural, visualmente es tan bella como precisa.

El vestuario es minuciosamente exacto y fiel a la época. La acción se desarrolla no cuando se publicó el libro, sino algo así como una generación antes. Me encanta la manera en que Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer) está ligeramente anticuada -frente a la muy de moda Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close)- y su uso de la "robe à l'anglaise" en sus paseos por el parque del Chateau, casi algo así como nuestro casual... recordad que esto fue mucho antes de que Rose Bertin creara esos ligeros vestidos "chemise" para María-Antonieta.

A closer look will reveal that it is the balance of all this elements, together with the precision of cut and exquisite attention to detail, that makes them so modern and still respectful of their heritage.

Las colecciones de Stefano Pilati para Yves Saint Laurent pueden parecer discretas, entre lo conceptual y lo llevable, extremadas pero con un toque de clásico chic parisino.

It's funny how often thing we have seen on the YSL runway show up on other shows a couple of seasons later... like this oversized gingham skirt is from the spring 2007 collection.
