Plaid Please!

The plaid shirt trend has been around for a couple of years already (think Balenciaga and Mary-Kate Olsen), but it seems it's going to be one of the key looks next fall, just by itself or mixed with different patterns (stripes, more plaid, even flowers and paisley), and also with a dressier styling (look out for the return of the bow-tie).

La tendencia de la camisa de cuadros ha estado ahí desde hace un par de años (pensad Balenciaga y Mary-Kate Olsen), pero parece que va a ser uno de los looks clave este otoño, por sí misma o mezclada con otros dibujos (rayas, más cuadros, incluso flores y paisleys), y también con un estilismo más formal (ojo el retorno de la pajarita).

And my dad has just sent me this picture of himself in the 60's wearing a plaid shirt. This type of shirt was worn by the fishermen in the Canary Islands were he is from.

Te be or not to be... fashionable!

In "Hamlet", when Laertes is taking leave of his family to return to France, Polonius (among other fatherly recommendations) tells him:

"Costly thy habit as your purse can buy,

For the apparel oft proclaims the man."

A wise fashion advice, as good then as now. For a man of high birth in Elizabethan England being fashionable was no small business, as can be seen in this miniatures by Nicholas Hillier, a self-portrait and portraits of two of his trendy friends.

Today is one of those days I would slip into bed and watch and old movie, one of those good funny ones to cheer me up, like "Ninotchka" (Ernst Lubitsch, 1939). After all if Garbo laughs why can't I? Maybe her absurd hat has some magic powers.

Hoy es uno de esos días en que me metería en la cama para ver una peli antigua, una de esas buenas comedias para animarme, como "Ninotchka" (Ernst Lubitsch, 1939). Después de todo ¿si Garbo ríe porqué no yo? Tal vez su absurdo sombrero tenga poderes mágicos.

Runway to Reality?

Every now and then magazines publish an article on how to make those seemingly impossible clothes we see on the runways work in everyday life: just pair that Balenciaga jacket with a pair of jeans... et voilá! Things in reality don't work that nicely, even a simple dress straight off the rack somehow doesn't look the same as on the model, sometimes a bit vulgar, sometimes too conventional or simply boring.

De vez en cuando las revistas publican un artículo sobre como hacer que esas prendas aparentemente imposibles que vemos en la pasarela funcionen en la vida real: combina esa chaqueta de Balenciaga con unos vaqueros... et voilà! Las cosas en realidad no son tan fáciles, incluso un sencillo vestido por alguna razón no queda igual que a la modelo, a veces un poco vulgar, a veces demasiado clásico o sencillamente aburrido.

Now Indy is roaming the world again in search of a Crystal Skull, maybe this lovely knick-knack by artist (?) Demian Hirst? I'm sure the previous owner doesn't give a damn about the diamonds or the 100 million dollars or pounds or whatever they were that it costs (more than you and I could earn in a lifetime in any case).

Desert Modernism

We all have our little fancies that define our style and our life ideal... writing about them is what a blog is for, isn't it? 

Not that I'm really interested in the actual Palm Springs (probably a dull place where people play golf), but the fact that this small town in the Coachella Valley, east of Los Angels, has been a getaway for many movie stars and wealthy angelenos, and is the cradle of what is known as "Desert Modernism", an architectural style at a time functional, elegant and modern: large awnings to keep the sun out, whitewashed walls and natural stone to blend in the landscape, and bright colored details to stand out against the glaring desert sun.

Todos tenemos esas pequeñas fijaciones que definen nuestro estilo y nuestro ideal de vida... escribir sobre ellas es para lo que sirve un blog ¿no? 

No es que me interese el Palm Springs actual (probablemente un sitio muermo donde la gente juega al golf), pero el caso es que esta pequeña ciudad en el valle de Coachella, al este de Los Ángeles, ha sido la escapada de estrellas de cine y ricos angelinos, y es la cuna de lo que se conoce como "Modernismo del Desierto", un estilo arquitectónico a la vez funcional, elegante y moderno: amplias marquesinas para proteger del sol, paredes encaladas y piedra natural que se funden con el paisaje, y detalles en colores vivos que destacan bajo el deslumbrante sol del desierto.

Oh Jackie!

Jackie Kennedy won her place as one of the most influential twentieth century fashion icons with her sense of style and her flawlessly groomed "chic", though personally I find her elegance somewhat shallow. 

Her public persona was carefully staged for a perfect performance as happy wife (?), young mother and ideal First Lady of a modern and cultivated America. Her clothes were the costumes for the character she created, often copies or bought at stores that had license to reproduce parisian designs, sometimes the real thing (as the infamous pink Chanel she wore in Dallas).

Jackie Kennedy se ganó su sitio como uno de los iconos de moda más influyentes del siglo XX con su sentido del estilo y su "chic" pulido al máximo, aunque personalmente encuentro su elegancia algo superficial.

Su personaje público era una cuidadosamente montada puesta en escena como esposa feliz (?), madre joven y Primera Dama ideal de una moderna y culta América. Sus atuendos eran el vestuario para el papel que se había creado, a menudo copias o comprados en tiendas que tenían licencia para reproducir modelos parisinos, a veces lo auténtico (como el malhadado Chanel rosa que llevó en Dallas).

For the Inaugural Ball in January 1961, Jackie wore an Ivory silk double twill satin gown designed by Oleg Cassini, reminiscent of her french heritage and her love of History and the XVIIIth century, though it bears some similitude to an inaccurate "stolen" sketch of Balanciaga's design for Queen Fabiola's wedding dress published in a fashion magazine.

On her arrival in Dehli she wore a hot pink Rajah coat in wool and silk "Alaskine", by Oleg Cassini, and a matching wide brimmed boater to protect her from the Indian sun, designed by Roy Halston for Bergdorf and Goodman.

Postcard from Barcelona

I wanted to write this post last night, but my flight was delayed and the luggage took forever to come out, so when I got home it was pretty late... anyways, we had a great time. Two of my friends from work, whom I shall call Belle-de-Jour and Carrie Bradstor (for the sake of their privacy) went to a fabric trade show and were staying over the week-end to visit our very dear Ana (who moved there a couple of months ago because she got a designing job in a fashion company) so I decided to join in.

I arrived friday night and went straight to Gimlet for cocktails, and from there the night went on smoothly until we got to this place where they let you in after seeing you through a peep-hole. On our cab ride home Ana realized her wallet was stolen, so we ended up at a police station in a scene worthy of Fellini: Ana crying on Carrie´s shoulder, Belle-de-Jour with feathers in her hair and long gloves, and me telling the policeman (pretty cute, btw) I thought we had been to a secret place when of course they knew all about it...

The next day we got up late, went looking at trendy stores around the Born, had lunch on a lovely "terraza" behind the Boquería market near the Ramblas, and after a little rest had dinner at Oven.

On sunday (though the weather was a bit cold) we went for a long walk along the beach and had lunch at a very nice place near the Olympic harbor. But most of all we were among friends and having a good time!

Quería haber escrito este post anoche, pero mi vuelo tuvo retraso y las maletas tardaron siglos en salir, así que cuando llegué a casa era bastante tarde... en todo caso, lo hemos pasado muy bien. Dos amigas del trabajo, a las que llamaré Belle-de-Jour y Carrie Bradstor (por aquello de preservar su intimidad) fueron a una feria de tejidos y se quedaban el fin de semana para ver nuestra queridísima Ana (que se mudó allí hace un par de meses para trabajar de diseñadora en una empresa) así que decidí unirme al plan.

Llegué el viernes por la noche y me fui directo al Gimlet a tomar unos cócteles. De allí la noche transcurrió sin incidentes hasta que llegamos a este sitio en el que te dejan entrar tras verte por una mirilla. En el taxi de vuelta a casa Ana se dió cuenta que le habían robado la cartera, así que acabamos la noche en comisaría en una escena digna de Fellini: Ana llorando sobre el hombro de Carrie, Belle-de-Jour con plumas en el pelo y guantes largos, y yo diciéndole al policía (bastante mono, por cierto) que pensaba que habíamos estado en un sitio secreto cuando ya lo conocían de sobra...

Al día siguiente nos levantamos tarde, fuimos de tiendas por el Born, a comer a una terraza ideal detrás del mercado de la Boquería, y después de descansar un rato, a cenar al Oven.

El domingo (aunque hacía un poco de frío) dimos un largo paseo por la playa y comimos en un sitio muy agradable cerca del puerto Olímpico. Pero sobre todo ¡hemos estado entre amigos y pasándolo bien!

This beautiful painting is one of his works and is hanging in my house... just to make you envious. It has also been my dad's birthday two days ago and he's also a painter (funny, no?), I'll post about him and show you his work soon.

That must be what models eat, if you look closely at the pictures and leave out the clothes, the make-up, the lights, and look only at their bodies. Clothes look good on slim models, we know that, but aren't we going too far? I mean, being thin (even very thin) is one thing, being plain skinny is another, and some of the girls look like they're sick... unfortunately they probably have to be like that if they want to do another runway than Versace (by the way, Carmen Kass looked great).

Please someone give them a bacon sandwich!

Eso debe ser lo que comen las modelos, si miras de cerca las fotos y no te fijas en la ropa, el maquillaje, las luces, sino sólo en su cuerpo. La ropa queda bien sobre modelos delgadas, eso lo sabemos, ¿pero no estamos yendo demasiado lejos? Quiero decir, estar delgada (incluso muy delgada) es una cosa, estar escuálida es otra muy distinta, algunas chicas parecen enfermas... por desgracia probablemente tienen que estar así si quieren hacer otro desfile que no sea el de Versace (por cierto, Carmen Kass estaba guapísima).

¡Por favor que alguien les dé un bocadillo de panceta!

2008/09

Well, now that the fall runways are over, all I can say is: how unexciting. Maybe because of the lurking crisis, or because we're in a transitional fashion moment, there hasn't been much new out there. There's been good and bad (even terrible) collections, but nothing striking, even at houses like Marni or Lanvin, just to name two. Since deep down I'm a minimalist I decided to pick only six collections and a few looks from each. You can see all the rest here.

Bueno, ahora que han pasado los desfiles de invierno, solo puedo decir: que poco emocionante. Ya sea la crisis que amenaza, o que estamos en un momento de transición en moda, no ha habido muchas novedades ahí fuera. Ha habido buenas y malas (incluso espantosas) colecciones, pero nada llamativo, incluso en casas como Marni y Lanvin, por nombrar dos. Ya que en el fondo soy un minimalista he decidido elegir solo seis colecciones y unos cuantos modelos de cada. El resto lo podéis ver aquí.

Balenciaga

Nicholas Ghesquière explores the Spanish heritage of the house, and continues investigating in the direction he took in his spring collection. Masterly structured or fluid draping, architectural cuts, sometimes adorned with "Samurai" prints.

Take off the wigs and the dark lips, and try imagining these clothes (well, maybe not the see-trough blouse!) on an elegant middle-aged "parisienne" and... it works. The concept is hard but the clothes are real.

Quitad las pelucas y los labios oscuros, e intentad imaginar estas prendas (bueno, ¡la blusa transparente tal vez no!) sobre una elegante "parisienne" de mediana edad... y funciona. El concepto es duro pero la ropa es real.

Prada

Well, it seems Miuccia likes guipure, doesn't she? But it will probably be a very influential collection, expect to see lace and orange paired with camel everywhere next season.

Bueno, parece que a Miuccia le gusta el guipur, ¿no? Pero seguramente será una colección muy influyente, esperaos a ver encajes y naranja combinado con camel por todas partes la próxima temporada.

Dior

Following the path of his cruise collection, John Galliano plays with the 60's and Las Vegas (think Ann Margret) with bright colors and ironic maxi-sequins that somehow manage to look cheap and glamorous at the same time, though i.m.h.o. some of the clothes themselves have a somewhat small-town-seamstress quality about them.

Siguiendo la senda de su colección de crucero, John Galliano juega con los 60 y Las Vegas (pensad Ann Margret) con colores brillantes e irónicas maxi-lentejuelas que de algún modo consiguen parecer baratas y glamurosas a la vez, aunque e.m.h.o. algunas prendas en sí tienen un aire como de modista de provincias.

Gucci

Frida Giannini takes bohemian-chic and mixes it with Russia, persian carpets and The Doors. Beautiful details and clothes that are both ethnic and sexy, which is quite difficult. It will probably sell like hot-cakes in Moscow.

Frida Giannini coge el chic bohemio y lo mezcla con Rusia, alfombras persas y The Doors. Detalles preciosos y ropa que es a la vez étnica y sexy, lo cual es bastante difícil. Seguramente se venda como rosquillas en Moscú.

Alexander McQueen

Very english, it's all there: Queen Victoria, My Fair lady, King's Road, Bloomsbury, Helena Bonham-Carter... but actually what it reminds me of is a blend between Christian Lacroix and Vivenne Westwood.

Muy inglés, está todo allí: la Reina Victoria, My Fair lady, King's Road, Bloomsbury, Helena Bonham-Carter... pero en realidad a lo que me recuerda es a una mezcla entre Christian Lacroix y Vivienne Westwood.
